The History of Injective (INJ)

Injective Protocol, often abbreviated as INJ, was founded in 2017 by Eric Chen and Albert Chon. The two co-founders created the project with the goal of decentralizing finance (DeFi) and overcoming the limitations that were being experienced in traditional financial systems. Their vision was focused on delivering a platform allowing users to trade any derivative on the blockchain in a decentralized manner, with zero gas fees—a proposition that garnered attention early on.

In its early days, Injective was backed by Binance Labs, the venture capital arm of Binance, and received support from other prominent investors such as Pantera Capital. With that backing, the project entered its testnet phase, which saw significant activity as it started attracting a community of developers and traders interested in decentralized finance and the promise of a fully decentralized exchange.

In 2020, Injective transitioned into a more advanced phase by launching its mainnet after a series of successful testnet operations and platform improvements. The mainnet sought to bring to life the fully decentralized trading experience, enabling users to interact with a blockchain-based decentralized exchange platform where they could trade various assets. A key aspect of this launch was the embrace of Layer-2 technology, which allowed faster transaction processing with lower fees, thereby addressing common concerns related to Ethereum blockchain congestion.

The core of Injective's technology allowed for the seamless operation of decentralized finance mechanisms, notably permissionless derivatives trading without the need for a centralized intermediary. This permissionless feature was a significant advancement in the fast-growing DeFi space, allowing Injective to stand out from the crowded field of decentralized financial platforms.

The protocol is built around the Cosmos SDK, which facilitates interoperability with other blockchains, thereby enhancing its utility and reach. This cross-chain capability allowed Injective to offer not only decentralized trading but also interoperability with various blockchain ecosystems. Over time, it has integrated decentralized governance features, allowing holders of the INJ token to participate in decision-making processes that control the future updates of the protocol.

The INJ token serves as the native currency of the Injective ecosystem and plays a vital role in governance and staking within the platform. Governance token holders are given the ability to propose and vote on changes to the protocol, ensuring that the direction of the platform is guided by a decentralized community rather than centralized decision-makers.
