Early Success with BitShares
Larimer initially made waves in the crypto space by founding BitShares in 2013, a decentralized asset exchange. The platform they built provided the foundation for decentralized exchanges, which have become more popular years afterward. Alongside Charles Hoskinson, another influential crypto developer, Larimer’s role in BitShares established him as a key thought leader in the blockchain ecosystem.
The Steem Blockchain: A Content Revolution
Building on his success with BitShares, Larimer turned his attention to a new project: Steem, a blockchain-based social media platform where users could “mine” cryptocurrency by creating and curating content. The Steemit platform gained significant popularity for being one of the first blockchain projects to directly integrate crypto incentives into social media functionality.
However, despite initial success, Steem went through a series of governance challenges and conflicts after the acquisition of its blockchain development company by Justin Sun, founder of Tron.
