The History of RLC2
The cryptocurrency RLC2 is the native asset of the iExec blockchain project, a decentralized cloud computing platform aimed at providing on-demand access to computational resources. The project's origins trace back to 2016, when its founders sought to create a framework for leveraging idle computing power across a decentralized network. The iExec team is led by Gilles Fedak and Haiwu He, both of whom bring extensive expertise in distributed computing and cloud infrastructure to the project.
iExec launched officially in 2017 following a successful Initial Coin Offering (ICO), during which the project raised approximately $12 million. The ICO issued the RLC token, which stands for "Run on Lots of Computers," signaling its core purpose of facilitating the decentralized computing marketplace that iExec envisioned. Unlike traditional centralized platforms, the founders intended iExec to foster a decentralized ecosystem that allows developers, applications, and data providers to access computing power in a trustless, secure manner.
One of the critical milestones for RLC2 occurred as iExec released successive versions of its platform in stages. Early platform iterations focused on creating a decentralized marketplace for computing power, one that could be used by various industries, including artificial intelligence, healthcare, and finance, among others. The iExec team implemented a Proof-of-Contribution mechanism that allows participants in the network to prove their computing tasks were successfully executed, which sets it apart from cryptocurrencies relying on Proof-of-Work or Proof-of-Stake consensus models.
Since its creation, RLC2 has been utilized as the utility token within the iExec ecosystem. Users pay for computational resources and services on the network using RLC2, giving the token a clear function and utility. iExec has also pursued partnerships and collaborations, particularly with blockchain research initiatives and major organizations exploring cloud computing.
Over time, RLC2 has solidified its position as a niche asset within the broader cryptocurrency space. Though its technological underpinnings are designed for a fairly specific use case, iExec and RLC2 aim to address a growing demand for decentralized cloud solutions as traditional cloud infrastructure faces scalability and data privacy concerns.
The history of RLC2 is tightly intertwined with the vision of iExec: a decentralized, efficient, and secure alternative to conventional cloud computing platforms. Its development reflects the steady evolution of this blockchain effort to solve modern computational and data-sharing challenges.
