The History of DERO
DERO is a blockchain-based project that first emerged in 2017 with the aim of introducing a platform that combines privacy, security, and scalability. Its development has positioned it as one of the pioneering blockchain initiatives focused on integrating privacy features into a decentralized ecosystem while also addressing common limitations seen in early blockchain projects. The project was conceptualized and launched with the goal of creating a secure and private smart contract platform, distinguishing itself from other cryptocurrencies and blockchains that prioritized either privacy or programmability, but not both.
The inception of DERO started with its development team introducing a novel blockchain architecture. Instead of building directly on existing protocols like Bitcoin or Ethereum, DERO opted to create its own custom technology. This included leveraging elements of the CryptoNote protocol, which was already well-known for its focus on privacy, and combining it with new-generation blockchain features. As part of its foundation, DERO moved away from the CryptoNote DAG (Directed Acyclic Graph)-based structure and pioneered its own fully customizable layer-one solution.
One of the major breakthroughs for DERO came with the introduction of "DAG and POW" hybrid consensus, which merged elements of directed acyclic graph topology with proof-of-work mechanisms. This innovation allowed the blockchain to process transactions more efficiently while retaining its private-by-design functionality. The DERO Blockchain was later upgraded to the DERO Atlantis blockchain, a further step in improving consensus protocols, privacy, and scalability. DERO Atlantis also incorporated fully homomorphic encryption technologies, which elevated its privacy capabilities, enabling encrypted smart contracts and private transactions.
A key innovation of DERO is the DERO Virtual Machine (DVM). Released as part of its ongoing development, the DVM set the project apart by offering a platform for developers to build private smart contracts. Unlike traditional smart contracts found in blockchains like Ethereum, DERO's implementation ensures that the data processed and stored within these contracts remains completely confidential. By addressing the lack of privacy in other smart contract-enabled blockchains, DERO gained attention within both the developer and user communities seeking a robust yet private solution.
Through multiple upgrades and innovations over its history, DERO has sought to build on its early vision, aiming to combine privacy features with a focus on efficiency and scalability. As a result, it holds a unique place among blockchain projects with an emphasis on both programmability and privacy.
