How rETH Works

rETH is a prominent crypto asset from the Rocket Pool ecosystem designed to support decentralized staking within the Ethereum network. It is a liquid staking token (LST), representing a staker’s share of ETH staked through Rocket Pool, alongside the rewards accrued over time.

Understanding Liquid Staking

Liquid staking enables Ethereum holders to participate in the staking process without running a validator node directly. Traditional staking typically involves locking up ETH in a validator node, which renders it illiquid and inaccessible until withdrawal conditions are met. Rocket Pool, with its rETH token, allows users to bypass this restriction by offering a way to maintain liquidity while staking.

rETH Issuance Process

When a user deposits ETH in Rocket Pool, they receive rETH in return. The issuance process involves two key components:

  • Staking Contribution: A user contributes ETH, which is added to Rocket Pool's decentralized node operator network or staking pools.
  • Token Allocation: rETH is minted to represent the user's staked ETH and the rewards expected to accumulate. The amount of rETH received corresponds to the value of ETH staked, adjusted for Rocket Pool’s reward equation and possible fees.

The value of rETH gradually increases in relation to ETH, reflecting the staking rewards earned over time.

How Rewards Accumulate

Staking rewards in the Ethereum network are generated through transaction fees and validator rewards for helping secure the blockchain. These rewards are distributed proportionally to stakers, minus Rocket Pool's node operator fees and protocol commission fees. As rETH is tied to these rewards, its value appreciates relative to ETH without requiring the holder to actively manage the staking process.

rETH Redemption

To exit staking, users can redeem their rETH for ETH via Rocket Pool once Ethereum's withdrawal mechanisms allow the release of staked funds. The redeemed ETH will amount to the original deposit plus any staking rewards. Alternatively, users can trade rETH on secondary markets without waiting for network withdrawal processing.

Decentralization and Security

Rocket Pool enables decentralized staking by relying on a network of independent node operators who contribute to Ethereum’s security and robustness. As opposed to centralized services, Rocket Pool distributes staking responsibilities across multiple participants, reducing risks tied to central points of failure.
