How PHA (Phala Network) Works

Phala Network (PHA) is a decentralized cloud computing protocol that focuses on data privacy preservation. It utilizes a combination of blockchain technology and privacy protection mechanisms to create a trustless, secure cloud computing environment. At the core of Phala’s system are Trusted Execution Environments (TEEs), which allow nodes to execute confidential computations securely.

Trusted Execution Environment (TEE)

The Trusted Execution Environment is central to Phala's operation. TEEs are secure areas in computing hardware that protect and isolate sensitive data from external threats. When computations are carried out inside the TEE, they are encrypted and inaccessible to the owner of the machine, hackers, or other external entities. This TEE framework allows Phala to act as a decentralized cloud platform that protects user data and computations from being exploited or leaked.

Blockchain Framework

Phala combines its TEE-based privacy layer with blockchain technology to ensure decentralization and security. The blockchain plays an integral role in providing a transparent and immutable ledger of transactions, while the TEE provides off-chain computation. In this way, Phala ensures that sensitive data and computation results are both secure and verifiable without disclosing the contents of the data.

Phala Network is built on the Substrate framework, which allows it to be interoperable with the broader Polkadot ecosystem. This compatibility is particularly important as it enables Phala to communicate with other parachains within the Polkadot network, enhancing its decentralized model and increasing its potential use cases in cross-chain applications.

Phala's Dual Token System

PHA operates within a dual-token economic model involving two types of tokens: PHA and the compute resource token known as pRuntime. PHA is the utility token of the Phala Network, and it is used to pay for confidential computing resources. Participants staking PHA to secure the network can earn rewards in exchange for their contributions to the network's security and efficiency.

On the other hand, pRuntime tokens are used as an internal resource for managing computational power among the network nodes. These internal tokens work separately from PHA to ensure that the privacy-preserving computations remain efficient without compromising security.

Confidential Smart Contracts

Another notable feature of Phala Network is its ability to support confidential smart contracts. Traditional smart contracts do not offer privacy, meaning that all data involved in contract execution is visible to network participants. In contrast, Phala's smart contracts, executed within the TEE, ensure that sensitive information remains hidden while still providing the functionality of smart contracts.
