Understanding How BURST Works

BURST is a blockchain-based cryptocurrency that distinguishes itself within the wider crypto market by employing a unique consensus mechanism called Proof of Capacity (PoC). This technology enables BURST to offer a more energy-efficient method of securing transactions and maintaining its decentralized network compared to traditional Proof of Work (PoW) systems.

Proof of Capacity (PoC) Explained

The Proof of Capacity mechanism is central to how BURST operates. Unlike PoW, which requires miners to continuously perform complex calculations, PoC allows miners to use unused hard drive space to validate transactions and create new blocks. This works by precomputing and storing solutions to a cryptographic puzzle, called “plots,” on a miner’s hard drive. Once the plots are established, mining involves retrieving the stored solutions to participate in the mining process, making it less resource-intensive.

This approach results in significantly lower energy consumption because hard drives consume far less power compared to the GPUs and ASICs required in traditional mining setups. Additionally, users with a modest amount of hard drive space can participate in the network, promoting decentralization.

Transaction Process

BURST enables transactions on its blockchain by processing them in blocks. These blocks are created by miners who compete for the right to add the next block to the chain by leveraging the data stored in their hard drives. Once a miner successfully solves the cryptographic challenge using precomputed plots, the proposed block is verified by the network. When the consensus is reached, the block is added to the blockchain, and the miner receives a reward.

The BURST network uses an average block time of four minutes, maintaining a steady pace for transaction finality. Transaction fees are included in each block, incentivizing miners to continue participating in the network.

Decentralized Application (dApp) Support

Burstcoin also supports smart contracts and decentralized applications (dApps), an advanced capability for a PoC-based blockchain. By leveraging its platform, developers can create advanced features such as escrow services, lotteries, or decentralized marketplaces. This gives BURST additional functionality beyond its use as a simple payment system.

Storage Efficiency and Accessibility

One of the notable characteristics of BURST is its focus on accessibility. By utilizing hard drive space instead of computational processing power, it opens the door for participation to a wider audience. Users don't require specialized hardware like many other cryptocurrencies demand. Instead, a standard laptop or desktop with spare storage is enough to engage with the network.
