How XCH (Chia) Works

XCH, the native cryptocurrency of the Chia Network, operates on a blockchain system that sets itself apart from traditional proof-of-work and proof-of-stake systems. Chia Network introduces an innovative consensus algorithm called Proof of Space and Time, which aims to create a more energy-efficient and decentralized mechanism for supporting its blockchain.

Proof of Space and Time

The foundation of Chia’s functionality lies in its two key components: Proof of Space and Proof of Time. These elements are designed to work together to validate transactions and secure the network.

Transaction Process

When a new transaction is initiated on the Chia Network, it enters the mempool, where it awaits inclusion in the next block. Farmers compete to provide valid proofs from their storage plots to create the next block in the chain. Once a farmer meets the criteria through Proof of Space, a verifiable Proof of Time must be generated to finalize the block. The combination of these two mechanisms ensures that the system remains secure and resistant to manipulation while minimizing energy consumption.

Farming vs. Mining

XCH farming is distinct from traditional cryptocurrency mining. While mining in PoW-based blockchain networks consumes significant amounts of electricity through computational processes, Chia focuses on utilizing existing hardware, specifically idle hard drives and SSDs. This shifts the resource burden from energy consumption to available physical storage, aligning with the network’s environmentally conscious goals.

Smart Transactions

The Chia blockchain also includes features to enhance its usability with smart transaction capabilities. It supports custom transaction features like multi-signature wallets, atomic swaps, and others using its Chialisp programming language. These features enable XCH to potentially support a wide range of decentralized applications and use cases.
