The History of OKB
OKB is the utility token of the cryptocurrency exchange OKX, founded in 2017. The development of OKB marked an essential step in OKX's effort to build an ecosystem around its platform. OKB was created with specific functionalities to enhance the user experience within the OKX ecosystem and to incentivize participation in the platform’s services.
OKB’s journey began in 2018 when it was officially introduced to users. It was launched as an ERC-20 token built on the Ethereum blockchain. With its integration into the OKX ecosystem, OKB was designed to provide various benefits to users, including fee discounts on trades, voting rights for governance matters, and access to OKX’s wide range of features like token sales through its Jumpstart program.
In addition to its functionalities, OKB set out to create a robust token economy. Over time, the team implemented token buyback and burn programs to regulate the circulating supply. This approach aimed to build a deflationary mechanism, reducing the total supply of OKB over time and potentially increasing its scarcity within the market. The first buyback and burn program was implemented shortly after OKB's launch, and additional burning events have occurred since then as part of OKX's long-term strategy.
In 2020, OKB made a significant transition from the Ethereum blockchain to OKX’s proprietary blockchain known as the OKExChain. The move was intended to align the token with its native ecosystem and enhance its scalability, transaction speed, and usability. This change allowed OKB to play a more central role within the OKX ecosystem, enabling its use in decentralized applications and other services built on the new blockchain.
OKB has also expanded its applications outside of OKX. The token has been integrated with several third-party platforms and services, including those involving payment processing, travel bookings, and financial services. This initiative reflects OKX’s efforts to position OKB not only as an exchange-focused token but also as part of a broader ecosystem for blockchain-based services.
Throughout its history, OKB's development has been closely tied to the evolution of the OKX exchange and its ecosystem. It represents the exchange’s commitment to providing incentives for its users while contributing to the advancement of blockchain applications.
