The History of Injective Protocol (INJ)
Injective Protocol, abbreviated as INJ, was created as a decentralized finance (DeFi) solution with a focus on providing a fully decentralized trading experience. The idea behind Injective came from the need to address certain limitations in traditional decentralized exchanges (DEXs) related to high fees, scalability, and access to financial derivatives. The project was conceptualized during 2017 when a surge of interest in crypto assets and decentralized solutions was driving innovation across the sector.
Injective Protocol was founded by Eric Chen and Albert Chon. During its early days, the team focused on building an open financial ecosystem that would allow users to trade on a variety of decentralized products, including perpetuals, futures, and more, in an efficient and scalable way. This was a time when decentralized finance platforms were growing rapidly but still faced significant technological and adoption challenges.
The project gained exposure when it participated in Binance Labs’ incubation program. This program gave Injective Protocol both the financial backing and the mentorship required to refine the project’s vision and technically develop it. Binance invested in Injective once again after completion of the incubation program, enabling the project to further develop the infrastructure necessary for its operations and launch.
One of the essential milestones in its development was the launch of its mainnet. Unlike some existing decentralized exchanges of its time, Injective Protocol positioned itself as a fully decentralized layer-2 solution which leveraged the Tendermint consensus mechanism. Built on the Cosmos SDK, one of the key innovative aspects was its ability to reduce the latency and high transaction costs that were common issues for Ethereum-based DeFi protocols.
In addition to its trading infrastructure, Injective introduced a governance model where INJ token holders could participate in governance decisions, ranging from protocol upgrades to listing new trading pairs. This decentralized governance structure allowed the community a strong voice in the long-term development of the protocol, giving it a democratic structure which has appealed to many blockchain projects since.
Over time, the platform has expanded its role from being a decentralized derivatives protocol to offering a broad array of DeFi applications, enabling developers to create new decentralized financial services using its infrastructure. Nevertheless, Injective's decentralized nature still aims to enable a more open, transparent, and innovative financial system, consistent with the goals of the team since its inception.
