The History of Injective (INJ)

Injective (INJ) is the native token of the Injective Protocol, which was founded in 2017. The project emerged with a vision of creating a decentralized exchange protocol that would be more advanced and user-friendly than what was available at the time. The concept behind Injective was to create an infrastructure for decentralized finance (DeFi) that would allow for near-instant settlement speeds and enable users to trade a wide variety of assets with lower fees and heightened security. Initially, Injective was incubated by Binance Labs, marking one of the earliest support structures the protocol received. This early backing from Binance provided the necessary resources and momentum to develop Injective’s core functionality. As a layer-2 DeFi platform, Injective Protocol was designed to enable decentralized cross-chain trading and permissionless access to markets in an attempt to overcome the limitations traditional financial markets impose, such as high fees and slow transaction processing. In 2020, Injective launched its testnet, allowing developers and users to participate, provide feedback, and stress-test the protocol before the mainnet release. This stage was critical in refining the features of the technology toolkit, which was built to support decentralized derivatives and a fully decentralized order book. The same year, Injective closed a $10M Series A funding round led by Pantera Capital with participation from prominent investors such as Hashed, CMS Holdings, and QCP Capital. The outcome was increased recognition for Injective as one of the notable projects pushing decentralized exchange technology forward. Injective’s mainnet launch followed later and was an important milestone for the asset. It was rolled out to the public, showcasing its commitment to a decentralized future, focusing on derivatives trading and integrating layer-2 for improved scalability and efficiency. Since its inception, the Injective token (INJ) has been essential for the governance of the protocol, allowing token holders to participate in voting and decision-making for the project's development. Moreover, INJ is utilized for staking to secure the Injective blockchain and incentivize validators. The token also plays a role in protocol fees, maintaining a broad utility across the platform. The implementation of a decentralized, fully permissionless order book, combined with support for multiple assets, has made Injective an innovative addition to the growing DeFi ecosystem. Its layered history suggests a continued focus on aiming to solve some of decentralized finance’s key pain points.
