Injective (INJ) is a decentralized and interoperable layer-1 blockchain designed specifically to enable the seamless execution of decentralized finance (DeFi) applications, with a focus on providing a fast, secure, and efficient decentralized trading environment. Its history dates back to 2017 when it was founded by Eric Chen and Albert Chon, two individuals with an ambition to overhaul traditional financial systems and offer a more open, decentralized way for users to engage in trading and various financial activities.
**Founding and Vision**
The project began development with the idea of addressing some of the inefficiencies present in decentralized exchanges (DEXs) at the time, specifically the issues surrounding scalability, speed, and high gas fees. Given that many DeFi platforms were built on existing infrastructure, such as Ethereum, existing platforms sometimes struggled with congestion and cost issues related to trading transactions. Injective aimed to build a solution from the ground up, where high-speed cross-chain decentralized trading could function without many of the limitations tied to other platforms.
**Developmental Milestones**
By 2018, the team had successfully raised capital from various venture capital funds, allowing them to continue building their blockchain infrastructure. In 2019, Injective secured additional funding through Binance Labs, marking a significant milestone in the company’s development. This partnership with Binance Labs helped the team widen its scope of operations by providing access to a larger crypto audience and development resources.
In 2020, Injective launched its public testnet, which allowed developers and users to engage more directly with the ecosystem. The testnet focused on ensuring that the new functionalities met the required standards in terms of scalability and interoperability.
The following year, Injective launched its mainnet, and users were introduced to the full functionalities of its decentralized network. The mainnet allowed users to engage in trading and staking activities while benefiting from Injective’s innovations, such as fast settlements and low transaction fees. Since its launch, the blockchain has supported cross-chain trading, focusing on the ability to trade assets on different blockchain platforms in a decentralized manner.
**Technical Architecture**
One of the key features that set Injective apart from other blockchains is its technical architecture. Based on the Cosmos SDK, it uses a Tendermint-based proof-of-stake consensus mechanism, providing it scalability while maintaining decentralization. This architecture also allows Injective to provide low-latency transactions, which are often critical for trading use-cases, especially for derivatives and leverage trading.
